Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) was founded in 1970 to train talents for the economic, social and industrial development of central Ireland. The main campus is located 1.5 miles from Athlone city centre, making it easy to get to Dublin, the capital. The institute has achieved rapid development since its establishment, with a campus covering an area of 45 hectares.
 
The main buildings of AIT are where they locate Faculty of Business & Hospitality, Faculty of Engineering & Informatics, the library, the information technology center, the students' main dining hall and the school's administrative office.
 
At Athlone town centre, AIT also has another teaching centre, which houses Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Studies and Department of Polymer, Mechanical & Design.
While developing itself, AIT has also established many international relations, such as the overseas study training base of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College and Dongbei University of Finance and Economics.
