Internet Society of China was founded on May 25, 2001. It is a national, industrial and non-profit social organization voluntarily formed by China's Internet industry and internet-related enterprises, public institutions and social organizations. It is subject to the business guidance and supervision and management of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
 
By the end of 2016, the secretariat of the association has set up 10 offices, 26 sub-branches (working committees), 12 working groups and 12 special working bodies.

According to the official website of the Internet Society of China in April 2018, the association has one chairman unit, 26 vice chairmen units, 50 standing directors, 60 directors and 1,084 ordinary members.
